Y5/6C Monster animation

Y5/6C have recently been making Monster animations.

Science at Bristol Metropolitan Academy

During terms 3 and 4, children in Year 5 were lucky enough to go to Bristol Metropolitan Academy to carry out investigative science. Whilst there, they learned how to use Bunsen burners safely and gained a certificate. The children learned how fireworks are made and investigated the colours created when different metal compounds are heated.

Year 5 also investigated what happens when different substances are mixed together. They discovered that, sometimes, a new substance is formed and that this is called a chemical reaction. When there is no new substance formed then a physical change takes place.

In the last sessions, the children investigated micro-organisms and grew cultures. They learned about fungi, bacteria and viruses, then discovered that all parts of the body harbour germs. It made them realise how important it is to wash hands and be keep the body clean.
Year 5, enjoyed their learning and were very lucky to have the use of a science laboratory and be taught by Mrs Morrison, a specialist science teacher.

Sports Relief 2012

The children have spent the last fortnight taking part in various activities to raise money for Sports Relief. What a fantastic job they've all done! Year 6 ran a dodgeball match, all in fancy dress, something red or sports gear. Year5/6 held their own Mario Kart Race here at St Josephs! Lots of effort went into making the costumes at home and then using small karts they raced one another around the hall, endeavouring to do as many laps as possible. Year 5 ran a mile (between the class)three legged, also in fancy dress, something red or sports gear.  Mikenagh was brave enough to do it in a full three piece suit, whilst Mia had a fantastic, homemade Mini Mouse Outfit! Year 4, Year 3, Year 2 and Year 1 ran a mile in fancy dress, something red or sports gear. Maya completed the course in a penguin costume, whilst Jake managed to complete the mile in a Darf Vader outfit, accompanied by a red wig for Sports Relief. Reception has some amazing fancy dress costumes too! We had Spiderman, Batman, Power Rangers, Fairies all doing their very best to run, skip, walk as many laps of the playgroundas they could. Many managed to do the mile! The Sports Relief fortnight came to a climax with a fantastic cake sale on Friday, with the children themselves taking on full responsibility for organising it all. Didn't they do a fantastic job?! We definitely have some young apprentices in the making! They advertised the event, organised the produce and all the staff and took and counted the money, practising their maths skills along the way. They made an absolutely fantastic total of £73! A brilliant achievement!  This will be added to all of the sponsorship money once counted on Friday. Watch this space to find out what the over total is! Well done to all of the children for their special contribution to Sports Relief 2012, it was a fantastic fortnight!!Enjoy looking at all of the photos of the children in action!

Today Y5/6C took part in real life Mario Kart racing as part of Sports relief. The children dressed in their favourite Mario Kart characters, raced around a track raising lots of money for Sports relief.

Monster science

In Science Y5/6C have been learning about habitats and adaptations. The class was set the challenge of using their new knowledge in science to think about possible monsters and their environment. If a monster existed what would be its habitat? what would it eat? how would it adapt to its environment? In groups the children produced ideas and gave a presentation to show off their learning.

Shipwrecked!

This week Y4J have been trying to get off our islands by throwing bottles out to sea with letters of hope in them. The children have been working hard on their descriptive writing to make sure that any reader would come looking for them. Here are three examples of the excellent writing that the class produced.


"March 8th 2000

Dear reader,
If you get this note I have been stranded on a mysterious island and I know I will probably be dead by now but it I am not, please find me.
Iwill describe my surroundings: there are lots of rocks and not many trees. Also there are small animals in the pool that are not nice to eat (but the crabs were nice by painful!) My ship’s pole is sticking out like old sheep’s ribs. There are birds singing like a beautiful orchestra. There are wild animals as well so be careful.
So please help me. I also want to ask you to look after my family.

" Somewhere between South America and Africa
In the Atlantic Ocean

Dear Whoever receives this letter,
I am writing to ask for help as I am abandoned on this mysterious foggy island somewhere between South America and Africa. This strange island is very hot and there is not much water around me except the salty, fishy taste of the wavy sea that I nearly drowned in when the ship sank. I was on my way to South America when a storm struck and hit the ship just like a thunderbolt. All the crew were terrified and started jumping into the lifeboats. And that’s all I can remember until I woke up on this island.
I will endeavour to describe my surroundings: there are rough rocks that have nearly been eaten away by the sun on a long sandy beach where the sand looks like gold. In the middle of the island is a small jungle with lots of fruit. I have no idea what animals might await me. At the back of the sandy beach are some giant cavernous caves so big that they are just like a dragon’s mouth.
If you do receive this letter and come to save me, beware there is shallow water and rocks. Oh, and please bring some food.

" Somewhere off the coast of Newfoundland

February 22nd 2003
Dear Whoever,

I am shipwrecked on this god-forsaken island and I need to get rescued for I can’t live much longer with no food or water. I’m on a sandy beach but all the water I can see is undrinkable and the temptation to drink it is making me crazy, even though when I do it makes me feel even thirstier.
The climate is very warm which makes me very thirsty. The beach goes all along the island but it seems to go on forever. It’s a big island that’s teeming with wildlife such as monkeys, mountain gorillas and toucans. There’s an enormous cliff which is probably 200 feet high.
I set up fires for rescue helicopters, searching the sea but it’s no use.
If you do find this letter send someone to save me, please. But it needs to be a helicopter because there are some reefs.
I’ve been here for more than a week and had the last drop of water yesterday when the wind was blowing through my hair in my cavernous shelter, the rain so heavy I thought it was going to flood my shelter. I am stuck here desperate for someone to rescue me.

Researching animals

In year one we have been using books to find out about animals that live in England. We have drawn pictures and written sentences to show what we have found out.

Science exhibition

On Friday Year 5 & Year 6 children went to the Galleries shopping centre to visit an interactive science exhibition. The event was hosted by the University of Bristol and gave the children the chance to explore and discover many different topics in science.
